Now we were getting somewhere! The polishing and preparation of the mould is something of a blur it all happened in time that is normally reserved for beer and TV, but we had made a promise that we intended to keep.
All this done in just three days (well nights mostly, but you know what we mean) the mould was ready to be used. We generally use the wet lay method of laminating carbon fibre, it avoids the costly requirement of autoclave and very expensive moulds that pre-preg or "dry" carbon fibre needs and with care and attention the results can be just as good.
When you are making something from Fibreglass or carbon fibre you are actually making the finished product inside out, so you start by putting the finished surface on. In this case it was a clear gel coat, followed by two layers of carbon fibre fabric and one layer of fibreglass sheet.
Another waiting period while the composite layers cures enough to be trimmed, at this point we did go home for some well earned beer and TV time. The next day the pod had cured enough to be released from the mold and trimmed and checked for any imperfections or flaws. Thankfully it was perfect which just left one more job to do before we sent it back to Redline................more polishing!
There simply hadn't been enough time to get the mould polished up to allow us to send the pod straight out so we had some more quality time with the compound and buffing wheel ahead of us before packaging it up and sending it to be fitted.
What Redline ended up with was not quite what they were expecting as the finished pod weighs only a few ounces, whereas the pod they sent to us weighed in at a few kilograms. The fit is perfect and the screen and speakers sit in just as they are supposed to.
The overall car has divided opinions in the UK skyline scene, but then I guess that is the effect the Redline guys were after, you can't deny the fit and finish of the car, even the bits we didn't do! No doubt the car will be at all the important shows this year, have a good look and make your own mind up.
